Dear Ms. Alexander,

The “American Naturopathic Medical Association” (ANMA) would like to express its disappointment at not being contacted for input regarding the Naturopathic portion of your February article entitled “A Consumer’s Guide To Alternative Medicine”. ANMA is the largest national association of Naturopathic doctors in the U.S. and maintains a website on the Internet.

ANMA suggests the following “corrections” that should be added to your articles on Naturopathy should you include it in any future editions. There are closer to 10,000 naturopaths across the United States. Approximately 2000 of them are members of ANMA. These people include M.D.’s, D.O.’s, D.D.S., Registered Nurses, and other medical professionals, all of whom have discovered the value of adding naturopathic principles and therapies to their practices.

AANP is a very small group of approximately 350 N.D.’s who share a misguided belief that they are “primary care physicians”. On the Internet they claim to be trained just like medical doctors with additional training in natural medicine. This is one of the greatest myths of the 20th century and very confusing to the public.

ANMA considers Naturopathy by itself, to be strictly a practice of non-invasive therapies and life style counseling. A licensed medical doctor on the other hand may practice naturopathic “medicine”. Just as Homeopaths qualify their practitioners through certification, ANMA also uses the certification method to qualify their members. Just as Ayurveda requires no licensing, in most instances naturopathy requires no licensing, as long as the individuals practice non-invasive natural health counseling. However, ANMA medical doctors with additional training in naturopathy already possess licenses in their respective fields and may use natural therapies as well as conventional medicine. ANMA also supports the current registration of Naturopaths in Washington, D.C., regulated by the Department of Consumer & Regulatory Affairs/Corp. Div.

Thank you for your consideration If you have any questions please feel free to call our main office at (702) 897-7053, or visit the ANMA website at http://www.anma.com

Sincerely,
ANMA
President
