20th Annual ANMA Convention

By: Charles E. Curtis

This is the last Monitor to be issued before the convention on September 14,15, & 16, 2001. Let me extend an invitation to all members to attend this year’s ANMA annual convention at the Tropicana Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, NV. A tremendous amount of effort has gone into organizing the convention from the programming of speakers, to the room arrangements. Your presence speaks to the strength of the association. Whether you come every year, or if this will be your first time, you will find it new, enjoyable and refreshing.

There is great interest in our form of health care. There is an ever widening audience for the therapies we offer. The annual convention is an opportunity to learn of the new, and perfect the old. The public is clamoring for better and safer ways to deal with their health problems. We, as a profession can answer the call, introduce the public to new and safer ways to treat their illnesses. To do this, it is necessary you be informed of the very newest, effective and safest therapies available. What better place to learn, than at the annual convention. The ANMA is dedicated to providing the most recent and most informed information available.

Las Vegas has again been chosen as the forum for this annual event. Las Vegas has the facilities to handle a group our size, as well as being the "entertainment capitol" of the world. The weather will be perfect as usual, and casual attire is acceptable. With all this going for us, it is no wonder we have so many requests to return to Las Vegas.

Finally, I thank you for demonstrating your support for the association that supports you. While at the convention, take part in the decision making process so that those trained in naturopathy can take their place in the health care arena. The ANMA staff tells me that many are taking advantage of the opportunities provided at the annual convention by making this a well attended event. We at ANMA look forward to greeting you.

Food Vitamin E is Superior

By: Robert J Thiel, Ph.D., N.D.

Portions of this article were previously published as Thiel R. Natural vitamins may be superior to synthetic ones. Med Hyp, 2000;55(6):461-469 Harcourt Publishers and Thiel, Robert J. Combining Old and New: Naturopathy for the 21st Century. Whitman Books, 2000 (available from www.healthresearch.com or www.amazon.com).

Introduction

Vitamin E acts to detoxify oxidizing radicals, can stabilize cell membranes, and even protects vitamin A from oxidation [1,2]. 90% of the vitamin E in the human body is stored in adipose tissue [1]. There are a lot of products containing vitamin E on the market today. There are even ‘new’ (which means they are not natural) vitamin Es. Are they all the same? Are all ‘natural’ vitamin E formulas food? Is twice as much synthetic vitamin E as good as vitamin E in food? Does science support the naturopathic position that natural vitamins are superior to synthetic ones? Does the body handle natural vitamin E differently than synthetic vitamin E? This article will address these issues.

Vitamin E Research

There has probably been more recent research involving vitamin E comparisons than other vitamins. "Synthetic and naturally derived alpha-tocopherol, and their ester forms, are commonly used in vitamin E supplements. These various forms give rise to isomer differences, ester differences and formulation differences that can affect their absorption and subsequent utilization" [3]. Natural vitamin E "as found in foods is [d]-alpha tocopherol, whereas chemical synthesis produces a mixture of eight epimers" [4] (natural vitamin E has recently been renamed to be called RRR-alpha-tocopherol whereas the synthetic has now been renamed to all-rac-alpha-tocopherol, though supplement labels rarely make this clear; on supplement labels d-alpha-tocopherol is generally ‘natural’, whereas dl-alpha-tocopherol is synthetic [1]). Natural RRR-alpha-tocopherol has 1.7 - 4.0 times the free radical scavenging strength of the other tocopherols, RRR-alpha tocopherol has 3 times the biological activity of the alpha-tocotrienol form, and synthetic vitamin E simply does not have the same biologic activity of natural vitamin E (some synthetic forms have only 2% of the biological activity of RRR-alpha-tocopherol) [1]. The biologic activity of vitamin E is based on its ability to reverse specific vitamin E-deficiency symptoms [1], therefore it is a scientific fact that, overall, the synthetic has less ability to correct vitamin E deficiencies than food vitamin E. There is an interesting reason for this, and that is that the body regulates plasma vitamin E through a specific liver alpha-tocopherol transfer protein, whereas it has no such protein for other vitamin E forms [1]. Or in other words, the liver produces a protein to handle vitamin E found in food, but not for the synthetic forms!

An article in the Journal of the American Dietetics Association had a large headline which stated, "The natural and synthetic forms of vitamin E deliver equal health benefits to human beings" [5]. It was not a thorough review article. Although it states, "Contrary to findings of studies conducted with animal subjects, human beings appear to be able to absorb the natural and synthetic forms as well", this conclusion was based upon one human study by Devaraj (et al) [6]. In it, subjects who received large amounts of natural or synthetic vitamin E had equal benefits in inhibiting the oxidation of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). Although this study has value, it did not prove the premise of the article. Vitamin E has more beneficial effects on the body than simply inhibiting oxidation of LDL-C [1,2]. Three issues later that same journal posted a smaller piece which stated, "The placenta, the fetal liver, or both are able to discriminate between natural (RRR-) and synthetic (all-rac) alpha-tocopherol; RRR-alpha-tocopherol is transported preferentially over all-rac-alpha-tocopherol...Maternal plasma and lipoproteins and cord plasma obtained at the time of delivery (after 5 to 9 days of supplementation) had higher concentrations of natural than synthetic tocopherol regardless of the vitamin E dose received", yet strangely it did not declare in large headlines that natural vitamin E was superior to synthetic vitamin E [7]. The Devaraj study is consistent with the results of a human study done by Traber (et al) which found that there was no difference in the absorption and secretion in chylomicrons of various tocopherols, but that there was a preferential enrichment of very low density lipoprotein with RRR-alpha-tocopherol [9]. Or in other words, natural vitamin E does act differently in the body than synthetic vitamin E.

Even mainstream researchers admit that, "Vitamin E is the exception to the paradigm that synthetic and natural vitamins are the equivalent because their molecular structures are identical" [9] (vitamin E, of course, is not the only exception). "Synthetic vitamin E is produced by commercially coupling trimethylhydroquinone (TMHQ) with isophytol. This chemical reaction produces a difficult-to-separate mixture" [9]. In foods, natural vitamin E is always found with lipids and other food substances [1,8]. "The antioxidant function of vitamin E cannot be fulfilled by just any antioxidant" [1]. A human study by Burton (et al) concluded that isolated "natural vitamin E has roughly twice the availability than synthetic vitamin E" [10] (synthetic vitamin E forms are analogues). A human study by Acuff (et al) found that natural vitamin E was absorbed 3.42 time better than synthetic in cord blood during pregnancy [11]. A human urinary excretion study by Traber (et al) concluded that natural vitamin E was 2.7 times better absorbed than synthetic vitamin E; this study suggests that it seems the body may want to rid itself of the synthetic as quickly as possible [12]. An animal liver study found that a natural vitamin E (RRR-alpha-tocopherol) complexed in foods was 2.6 times more retained than isolated USP d-alpha tocopheryl acid succinate (which is called a ‘natural’ form once it is isolated from its food complex) [13]; the combining of these two studies would suggest that food vitamin E is 7.02 times (2.6 x 2.7) retained than synthetic vitamin E. Another animal study suggests that natural vitamin E has less tumorgenicity than synthetic vitamin E [14], which seems to suggest that food vitamin E is safer.

These studies help demonstrate that although synthetic vitamin E has some of the benefits of natural vitamin E, it is not the same as consuming vitamin E in food. Thus, even taking ten times as much synthetic vitamin E than food vitamin E will tend to make one urinate the synthetic out faster, but it is not as good for the human body as natural vitamin E found in food.

The primary reason that isolated USP vitamins were developed was cost [15]. A secondary reason probably was standardization (it is harder to standardize food), including stability [16,17]. Neither reason justifies placing USP isolates on the same health level as natural vitamins as found in foods. Humans would not naturally consume most of the materials used to make and process synthetic vitamin E.

Conclusion

The studies cited suggest that the bioavailability of natural food complex vitamin E is better than that of isolated USP vitamin E and seem to be preferentially retained by the human body. It is not always clear if these advantages are due to the physiochemical form of the vitamin, with the other food constituents that are naturally found with them, or some combination. Regardless, it seems logical to conclude that for purposes of maintaining normal health, food vitamin E is superior to USP vitamin E. Even if new forms of vitamin E are on the market, they simply will not be food, thus from a naturopathic perspective they cannot be superior (even if they claim to have pharmacological, not nutritional, benefits).

Most people can improve their health by eating health-building whole foods such as fruits and vegetables and whole grains (especially wheat germ and raw oils, which are relatively high in vitamin E) [2,18]. Also, eating more natural foods tends to reduce free radical production, thus it helps reduce the amount of vitamin E needed [1]. Vitamin E nutrition should come from food or from supplements which are as close to food as possible. Since no one knows everything there is to know about nutrition, it seems logical from both a historical and modern perspective to consume vitamins in the forms found in natural food complexes and not to try to build health based on chemical isolates.

The Healing Power of Soy's Isoflavones

By: Monique N. Gilbert

Numerous reports indicate that, because soy is high in isoflavones, it can prevent illness and promote good health. Isoflavones are a class of phytochemicals, which are compounds found only in plants (phyto means plant). They’re also a type of phytoestrogen, or plant hormone, that resembles human estrogen in chemical structure yet are weaker. By mimicking human estrogen at certain sites in the body, isoflavones provide many health benefits that help you to avoid disease. Isoflavones are found in soybeans, chick peas and other legumes. However, soybeans are unique because they have the highest concentration of these powerful compounds. Soy contains many individual isoflavones, but the most beneficial are genistein and daidzein.

Isoflavones show tremendous potential to fight disease on several fronts. They have been shown to help prevent the buildup of arterial plaque, which reduces the risk of coronary heart disease and stroke. Isoflavones may help reduce breast cancer by blocking the cancer-causing effects of human estrogen. They may also prevent prostate cancer by hindering cell growth. Isoflavones can fight osteoporosis by stimulating bone formation and inhibiting bone resorption. They may even relieve some menopausal symptoms as well.

Soy isoflavones have antioxidant properties which protect the cardiovascular system from oxidation of LDL (the bad) cholesterol. Oxidized LDL cholesterol accumulates in the arteries as patches of fatty buildup which blocks the flow of blood, resulting in atherosclerosis. Genistein inhibits the growth of cells that form this artery clogging plaque. Arteries damaged by atherosclerosis usually form blood clots. This can lead to a heart attack if the clot goes to the heart, or a stroke if it goes to the brain.

Being a weak form of estrogen, isoflavones can compete at estrogen receptor sites, blocking the stronger version naturally produced by the body from exerting its full effect. Since high blood levels of estrogen are an established risk factor for breast cancer; weaker forms of estrogen may provide protection against this disease. Genistein has been found to hinder breast cancer as well as prostate cancer. Results from a new University of California study show that genistein slowed prostate cancer growth and caused prostate cancer cells to die. It acts against cancer cells in a way similar to many common cancer-treating drugs.

Isoflavones also play an important role in protecting and maintaining strong and healthy bones. Evidence shows that genistein and daidzein prevent bones from breaking down. Independent studies conducted at the University of Illinois and the University of Hong Kong concluded that consuming soy isoflavones can increase bone mineral content and bone density. Another study at the University of Texas suggested that isoflavones may also stimulate bone formation. By preserving bone health, increasing bone mass and inducing bone turnover, researchers noted the potential role of soy isoflavones in preventing, and possibly even reversing, the effects of osteoporosis.

The North American Menopause Society suggests that soy isoflavones can also be a natural alternative to estrogen replacement therapy for relief of mild menopausal symptoms. It may help offset the drop in estrogen and regulate its fluctuations that occur at menopause. Many women have reported a reduction in their hot flashes and night sweats when they regularly consume soy foods, like tempeh or tofu.

All these findings suggest eating soy foods, natural sources of isoflavones, can protect and enhance your overall health. Isoflavones work together with soy protein in fighting disease. Studies show that isoflavones account for approximately three-fourths of soy's protection, while its protein is responsible for about one-fourth. The best way to consume isoflavones is in food form, so that you can benefit from all of soy's nutrients and beneficial compounds. The highest amounts of isoflavones and soy protein are found in tempeh, whole soybeans (like edamame), textured soy protein, soynuts, tofu and soymilk. Researchers recommend consuming at least one to two servings a day. A serving is equal to 1 ounce of soynuts; 4 ounces of tempeh, textured soy protein (cooked), or edamame; or 8 ounces of soymilk.

For those new to soy, I recommend slowly adding it to your diet, until you develop a taste for it. In spaghetti sauces, replace ground beef with textured soy protein. Use tofu instead ricotta cheese in lasagna, or make herb dips with it in a food processor. Use soymilk to cream soups or make smoothies. People on the run can always eat soynuts. Tempeh is one of the easiest soy foods to prepare. To make a grilled tempeh sandwich, just cut it into slices, sprinkle on some soy sauce, saute with sliced onions and pile it on some bread. Remember, you will only continue to eat healthy foods if they taste good. So, experiment and have fun trying out new ways to enjoy soy. The factors used in the analysis of hormonal ratios included age, medical history of surgical procedures such as partial and/or complete hysterectomies, genetics and any type of hormone replacement usage.

All salivary testing was administered the second day of the menstrual cycle or, in the case of very infrequent menstruation or menopause, testing was administered the second day of a month.

The following hormones were analyzed: 6 cortisol levels at specific times related to organ function, progesterone, testosterone, estradiol, and DHEA levels.

Homeopathic hormone transdermal therapy was administered according to test results for a period of three, six or nine months with repeated salivary testing to monitor results.

Homeopathic meridian therapy was orally administered according to the meridian testing times that were abnormal.

A dietary regime was also administered to each client incorporating 60% raw whole foods, eliminating chemicals, and preservatives, sugar, caffeine, and alcohol.

RESULTS:

Approximately 550 salivary tests were analyzed, and 95% of those clients using hormone "replacement" had abnormal hormonal ratios. 96% of those clients using bio-identical, synthetic or natural hormone replacement had elevated progesterone levels and abnormal ratios of other hormones such as cortisol, testosterone, estradiol and/or DHEA.

Of the 96% of clients using progesterone transdermal or oral replacement including bio-identical, synthetic and natural hormones, approximately 40% of clients had extremely elevated progesterone (up to 50 times greater than normal reference ranges). Clients with high progesterone reported symptomology such as hair loss, bloating, depression, insomnia, headaches, mood swings and constipation. 85% of patients with elevated salivary cortisol levels indicated a link to blood sugar problems, such as diabetes and digestive disturbances.

After using homeopathic hormone rejuvenation for three months, both to detoxify excess progesterone and stimulate production of progesterone and other hormones, symptoms improved in over 70% of cases according to personal communication with patient and repeated salivary test done by a licensed independent laboratory. After using homeopathic formulas for an additional three months, new saliva test results revealed even further progress in balancing hormone ratios including cortisol levels.

The remaining cases had definite improvement but still chose to use some prescribed hormone replacement and/or consumed an excess of alcohol, sugar and caffeine. Approximately 20% of patients testing did not indicate a need to continue homeopathic treatment after only three months.

90% of patients, whose salivary test results indicated a low DHEA level, resulted in a definite increase in DHEA in three months when a formula containing homeopathic cortisol, adrenal, hypothalamus and pituitary was applied topically during specific days of the monthly cycle.

Further salivary testing within three months of usage of homeopathic meridian therapy indicated that cortisol levels improved dramatically in 50% of patients. 45% of patients indicated moderate improvement in most cortisol level testing times that were out of balance. 5% of patients indicated minor improvement in one to six cortisol-testing times.

CONCLUSIONS:

Progesterone and estrogen replacement can be dangerous and create a toxic build-up of hormones, even if monitored.

Hormone replacement has side effects whether it is supposedly 'bio-identical' or even a wild yam transdermal and can cause abnormal hormone ratios.

Hormone replacement will cause the gland or organ that is responsible for specific hormone production to slow down and eventually shut down hormonal production.

Adrenal cortisol stress can be the sole cause of hot flashes and other symptoms. Cortisol in humans is the principal glucocorticoid and it influences appetite and well-being, maintains blood sugar concentrations by promoting hepatic gluconeogenesis, and indirectly affects heart rate and pumping force by controlling synthesis of epinephrine in the adrenal medulla. Therefore, since increased cortisol secretion is critical in the physiologic response to stress and illness, we can see the value of utilizing six specific cortisol level testing times to evaluate acupuncture meridian function.

Elevated progesterone levels from hormone replacement can cause adrenal stress, liver toxicity, and abnormal hormonal ratios.

Homeopathy is the only modality, thus far, that has shown the ability when formulated for this purpose to stimulate cellular communication to the hypothalamus and pituitary to make natural biological hormones strengthening the biological terrain without toxic side effects.

A diet with 60% raw unprocessed food is an extremely valuable element in the release of stress on the adrenal glands and assisting in the stabilization of cortisol and glucose levels.

This research places hormone "replacement" of any kind at a questionable disadvantage.
